Enjoyable Fishing Trips in Yakutat, AK
Alaska is a world-renowned fishing destination because it hosts various fish species. Some of southeast Alaska’s best wild salmon can be found in the area’s rivers. King, sockeye, pink, and silver salmon, as well as both the fall- and spring-run wild steelhead trout, are also present in the area’s streams. The resident rainbow trout and Dolly Varden char are also seen all year round. Go on fishing trips in Yakutat, AK, soon and proudly take home your catch.
Although some people feel more comfortable with spinning and level-wind gear, fly fishing is our favored technique for catching salmon and trout. Contact us today to learn more about the area’s fishing activities and schedule a trip. We can provide rods, reels, and flies.
The Akwe River Self-Catered Trips
The Tongass National Forest is home to the Akwe River, a special fishing spot in a pristine wilderness environment. Only two camps are allowed to be set up along the Akwe River—a US Forest Service permitted site. Our special camp is situated directly on a spit between the river and the Gulf of Alaska. Silver salmon appear in the fall after the summer runs of sockeye, king, and pink salmon.
Within 25 miles of Yakutat is the Akwe River. We have self-guided or self-catered trips for groups of six to eight fishermen. Three miles from the camp is an airfield where parties are picked up. Honda four-wheelers and personal trailers are used to transport guests to the camp, which is situated six miles from the mouth of the Akwe River. There are three 14×16 tent cottages at the site. Two cabins are used for sleeping, while one serves as a cook cabin.
Each day of your trip, tour guides will take your group on a four-wheeler with trailers to different fishing sites while attending to your needs. We restrict each client’s salmon take to 8 fish, the possession limit for this river. While at camp, we can provide ice and vacuum packaging for your fish.
The Situk River Guided Trips
The pristine waters of this rare stream begin in the mountains to the north of Yakutat and flow through beautiful rain forests before finally spilling into the Gulf of Alaska 22 miles away. After driving to the area from Yakutat, visitors can hike or ride a boat to go fishing.
Spring-run steelhead trout from Situk River arrive in early March. They reach their peak migration during early May and typically leave the river system by the end of June. Due to the relative scarcity of wild stocks, we practice ethical catch and release fishing. However, we keep one prize fish (above 36″) for mounting. Early in June, sockeye and king salmon enter the river as steelhead trout move out. As pink and silver salmon finish their season, silverfish continues until October.
Guided fishing trips are available upon request. Experienced river guides who have fished these streams for many years will thoroughly explain, demonstrate, and teach methods for catching and landing fish. We accept novice fly-fishermen or -fisherwomen. Parties are limited to four individuals, with two-on-one coaching; however, larger families may be accommodated.
